At our recent open mic poetry reading, my Open Classroom students surprised me with some birthday poems! This one was written by my 10 year-old:
The Wren I Love Best
The Wren I love best
is the Wren who teaches me
and helps me when I get stung by a bee.
The Wren I love best
helps me make some unushawl (unusual) things
and helps me make pepclener (pipe cleaner) rings.
The Wren I love best
she souds (sounds) like a cow when she says moo
Wren I love you.
My 5 year-old and 9 year-old wrote this, with help from their dad, who is my business partner:
Thoughts on a Birthday
Happy Birthday to someone we like.
Her name is clearly not Mike.
She does a lot of work.
You know she doesn't shirk.
She loves the red trail to hike.
She may be talking on her cell phone.
For supper her family won't touch a bone.
Hina Hanta is her home.
Baths are by sponge, not bubbly foam.
And she doesn't brush her hair with a comb.
She doesn't celebrate with reindeer
and when she celebrates she doesn't drink beer.
October 31
Solstices of the Sun
and don't forget the Chinese New Year.
Wren, we wish you a Wonderful Birthday.
We hope it is awesome, happy and gay.
Don't eat too much cake
or mashed potato shake.
We wonder if there is any sorbet.
